I'd recommend either of the Active Isolated Stretching books (Aaron Mattes or Phil Wharton). You slowly swing the leg back and forth, with each swing gradually going a little further. Check out their book, The Stretch Book. Running Times had a great article a few months back with Phil Wharton talking about his success with a combination of AIS and massage. They are pretty good at explaining their methodology and giving examples of stretches for the entire body. I was out jogging in the woods, for fun, last August and didn't see a small, green, fallen apple in my path.
